AndrOpen Office 5.6.6 is rolling out now. This release moves the app onto the newest Apache OpenOffice code base, makes the install noticeably smaller, and fixes a long list of Word compatibility problems.
📱 A New Code Base
AndrOpen Office 5.6.6 is built on Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16, the latest release of the project the app is derived from. That brings every upstream fix and improvement along with it.
📄 Better Word Compatibility
A lot of work this cycle went into DOCX and DOC round-tripping — that is, opening a Word file, editing it, saving it, and getting back what you started with. Improved in 5.6.6:
- Drop caps
- Character highlighting and background colour
- Superscript and subscript
- Character spacing and kerning
- Paragraph borders and line spacing
- Tab stops and list numbering
- Table column widths and cell shading
- Fields, including EDITTIME, CREATEDATE, TEMPLATE, USERINITIALS and MACROBUTTON
📦 A Smaller Install
Parts of the app that most people never touch no longer ship to everyone. PDF import, WebDAV, the solver, icon themes and the conversion filters are now downloaded only when you actually use them — the app offers to fetch the piece it needs, right at the moment it needs it, and carries on once it arrives.
If you never open a PDF, you never download the PDF importer.
📁 Box, Renewed
Box support has been rebuilt on Box's current API, replacing the SDK Box retired in 2023. Sign-in and file transfers work as before, with progress reporting intact.
🛠 Under the Hood
- Target API level raised to 36, for the latest Android releases
- Fixed a crash on documents containing Syriac text
- Fixed missing fallback fonts for some scripts
